Welcome

GoDaddy decided to come out in support of SOPA. After many many people fled them, they decided to not publicly support the act, but still not speak out against it, either. Now, the proposal has been shelved, and PIPA is in place instead. I don't agree with PIPA, either, but I don't know GoDaddy's stance on it. I moved away from them, and am not going back. The move was predicated by their SOPA support, but I should have done it long ago. I am not a fan of their general practices, and their database servers are very slow. Look forward to more and more content as time goes by.

Snowless Winter

… and a lonely sled.

sled Out here in the country, you can hear the snow fall at night. It makes the lightest muffled tik as it hits the old snow. Tik-tik-tik-tik, endlessly in the night, a beautiful sound. Against expectations, Winter amplifies sounds, carries the train rumble, the semi on the highway, the sound of chopping wood floating through the night. Out of nowhere, there's a sound behind you! Jump, twirl, shiver a bit aside from the cold. And yet, there's no one there. It's a sound from the next field over, or the next, maybe a mile off. Once accustomed to the sounds of the country, they become comforting, the milieu of a place completely my own.

There is a privacy about it which no other season gives you.... In spring, summer and fall people sort of have an open season on each other; only in the winter, in the country, can you have longer, quiet stretches when you can savor belonging to yourself.

My Sites

"I prefer winter and fall, when you feel the bone structure of the landscape - the loneliness of it, the dead feeling of winter. Something waits beneath it, the whole story doesn't show."

Writing Letters

Life With a Personal Touch

pens I've been writing letters and postcards to people lately. I find people to write to from a sub-forum of reddit.com, Random Mail. I don't always have time to be a pen pal, or I'd use r/penpals. Besides that, the general pen pals title format bothers me a bit.. it's A/S/L, and I shouldn't need to post that to get a pen pal. I love writing. It gives me a great excuse to look at awesome papers, use my fountain pens, splurge on ink. I currently have a sample set of J. Herbin's Encre de Parfum. Green apple is definitely my favorite, though I'm growing fond of the orange that isn't quite orange - in look or scent. I have two somewhat new TWSBI pens that I love. I managed to mostly repair my Waterman, though it writes very broadly now. I'm even learning cursive properly. How long has it been since you sat down and actually wrote a letter to someone?
