Seeking Sanctuary
As the mother-sun abandons her post, trailing indigo shadows, the dark daughter-sun creeps above the opposite horizon, shedding dim violet rays into the rain plummeting from the sky, rushing to destroy its perfect water worlds, to dsah them into oblivion on the paving stones, to scrub the cold walls and through ways of dirt and grime. A finely dressed street sweeper, it swirls the teeming waters into waiting gutters, into thirsty drains.
Softly, gently, he glides, in and out of the conflicting shadows, from a sharp-cornered alley to a tiny space of
garden, to rest, crouched beneath a low plastered wall, heart hammering. The baby cries, thin, shrill, hungry, plaintive, and is franticly shushed. Cold eyes stare from beneath a torn and bloodstained hood, seeking sanctuary in the dusk.
A gate creaks open, and the silent figure seeps through, safety bought for a moment, the precious time to draw a breath to pray forgiveness of another's gods. 1   |
