Writing Poetry

How do you explain writing poetry? How do you teach someone to write it?
Poetry rhymes... well, it doesn't have to.
Poetry has a set meter... Not always true.
What then, is poetry? To me, it's an inspiration or an irresitable urge to put the jumble in my head into a coherent order, but it's also something more. It needs to be an order that flows, and a statement that's evocative. It gives tangible evidence of my thoughts and my emotions. It's a paper trail of my life that exposes the inner workings of my soul. Poetry, to me, speaks grace. A flight of words, caught in a snapshot upon a page. A racing of thoughts, captured and presented for consideration. I strive, in my essays, to show the inherent grace of poetry. The true mark of a well written essay is to use the rules to create the grace, rather than having grace in spite of them.
Words, when well written, have a life of their own.
Let them dance with the pleasure of living.
